How to Read Trouble Codes for Pre 1996 OBD I KIA
- To enter self-diagnostics, connect a jumper wire between GND and ENG TEST terminals at the Data Link Connector (DLC). See diagram below. The DLC is located at the center rear of the engine compartment.
- On all models, turn ignition on (engine off). Observe the MIL and identify the trouble codes. Perform appropriate diagnostic tests. See Trouble Code Identification below.

TO CLEAR THE CODES:
- Turn ignition off
- Disconnect negative battery cable for a minimum of 20 seconds
- Codes are now cleared
- Reconnect battery cable
NOTE: When power is disconnected to the ECM to clear codes, computer memory will be erased. A change in vehicle performance and driveability may be noted while the ECM re-calibrates for current driving conditions.
