I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee and I need to know where the crankshaft position sensor is so I can replace it. Please be as specific as possible.

  1. The crankshaft position sensor is mounted in the transmission bell-housing at the left/rear side of the engine block. The sensor is attached with one bolt.

    REMOVAL
Near the rear of the intake manifold, disconnect the pigtail harness (on the sensor) from the main electrical harness.
Remove the nut holding sensor wire clip to fuel rail mounting stud.
    Remove the sensor mounting bolt.
    Remove the sensor.
Remove clip from sensor wire harness.

    INSTALLATION
Install the sensor flush against the opening in the transmission housing.
Install and tighten the sensor mounting bolt to 7 N·m (60 in. lbs.) torque.
Connect the electrical connector to the sensor.
Install clip on sensor wire harness.
Install clip over fuel rail mounting stud. Install clip mounting nut.
