ARE YOUR BRAKES LOCKED UP TRY PUSHING THE CAR OUT OF GEAR ENGINE OFF.
EDIT: Ya this happend while I was driving, it just went out when i put in back in fifth gear cuz I was just coasting so I know for sure its not the brakes.
This sounds like you have lost your clutch disc or it has come apart and is no longer functioning. Closer inspection will be needed.
the same thing happened to me in a pick up i had i was going down the road and it just started reving but wouldnt go so i coasted to a stop had it towed and the the drive pin in my tranny had snapped its the rod that goes through the tranny in a manual well in mine anyway so we found a tranny and replaced it. side note we changed clutch slave and master cylinders pressure plate and it was none of that. good luck.
