Reversed Jumper Cables

I accidentally crossed the jumper cables when trying to jump start my 2005 MPV Mazda. Sparks flew off the battery post and a blackish smoke came up from somewhere….after that my car started normally and I went to the mechanic. He checked the batteries and the alternator and they were ok but when I was going back home, my car stopped running and start normally again… after that stopped running again and again but it starts normally when it happens. What damage could he have caused by having done this?
Please Help me. Thank You

  1. Not sure what went on, but there might be a connection issue or a failing alternator/battery. There was a reason you had to jump start the car to begin with. It is possible that some electrical wires might have been burned up in the process of crossing the wires and this would cause the need to test resistance on each fuse-less wire leaving the battery. http://www.freeautomechanic.com/wiringproblems%206.html

  2. Follow positive (Red) wire from battery to starter, you could have burned the wiring around the starter/generator/silinoid.

For a vehicle to run then stop, then restart? Could have burned a coil and as it heats up it creates an (Open) where their is no wire connection, then it cools down and the wires touch again and you can start the car and travel…until the coil gets hot again. This is a $50 to $120 dollar part.

I suggest pulling the starter off and the coil. Take them to a local auto store and have checked out. That way you don’t buy until you know. Then recheck your fuse box underhood and inside the car for blown fuses due to crossing cables. Hopefully you didn’t damage the Brain/computer/PCM….it all the same.

    Good luck,
