overheating

97 ford f150 4.6l  temp gage in normal range but no heat.gage goes to hot for abot 5seconds drops back to normal and then i have heat.coolant level full and and no bubbles in overflow and no white smoke from exhaust….any ideas

  1. This is a good description of a sticking / stuck thermostat. Have the thermostat replaced and it should take care of this issue.

I know this is an old post so i will ask if you ever found the problem?I have a 1998 150 with 4.6 175,000 miles doing the same thing while idling its fine when i drive the first few miles i lose heat the temp gauge bottoms out then shoots to maxed out then comes back to normal my heat works fine and i have no more problems until i shut the truck off and start it back up then the same cycle.I have changed thermostat flushed the system.It almost appears to be air locked or something.my top radiator is not warming up either even after driving its cold.Im just stumped i have no idea what to try next.
