1998 Chevy S-10 Backup Lights / Backup Light Switch

I have a 98′ S-10, manual transmission, 4cyl, 2.2l engine.

The backup lights are not working.  I’ve traced it to the backup switch / transmission.  I bought a new switch, and replaced it, but they still do not work.  I took the new switch out of the transmission, and manually depressed the bearing.  This turned the lights on.  So the trouble appears to be with the mechanism inside the transmission that activates the switch.

My question is, how do I service this?  Is there something internal that may need replaced?  If so, does it involve completely disassembling the transmission?  Thank you in advance for any information you may be able to provide!

  1. The switch is activated with the linkage. Try moving the linkage just a bit either directioin and see if the back up lights don’t illuminate. You may just need to make a slight adjustment here.
