1996 jeep cherokee rumbling type noise coming from back

of the vehicle when I take my foot off the gas pedal.  When accelerating I can barely hear it.

it is a 6 cyl automatic 4.0 engine

    This could possibly be a sign of rear end damage. I would have the fluid drained and inspected for metal fragments. If found, having the bearings replaced would be the next step.
