In most cases this is a sign of a chewed up spot on the flywheel where the starter gear engages it. The best way to find out would be to remove the starter and inspect both the starter gear and flywheel teeth/gear. If the flywheel is damaged you will need to have it replaced.
In cases where the starter solenoid is bad, you would here the starter motor whine and nothing else. The solenoids function is to move the spinning gear forward to engage the flywheel after the starter motor is spinning the starter gear. There would be no grinding noise in either case.
