2003 Dodge Intrepid 2.7l

After running 10 -15 minutes oil leaks heavy near rear main seal. Replaced the rear main seal twice (the first seal did not look bad but we did not want to chance it) and replaced the engine oil pan gasket with second seal. What else would cause oil leak in that area?

  1. Generally the seals won’t look bad, the surface of the crank will have a grove in it. A possible speedy sleeve can be used if the surface can not be cleaned up with emery cloth. Did you take note of what the surface area looked like?

Remember oil does not travel up hill, so be sure the valve cover gasket isn’t leaking oil downward and making you think the rear main is leaking when it is a different issue altogether.

  2. Everything looked pretty good. We figured the valve cover gasket is leaking too but the rear main seal was the major problem and then we would change the other. Thanks for the advice, we will change it out now.
