If you find it coming from the underside of the vehicle near the exhaust, it is generally the catalytic converter “heat Shield”. This is installed to keep from setting the grass on fire if you were to drive in a dry grassy field. You may chose to remove it or have it welded back on. It serves no other purpose.
Also would like to add, this is a normal failure part on all vehicles and is not just common to Subaru’s
