1985 34′ Motor Home 454 Chev drive line

Motor home sat for 5 years and was in perfect working order when parked.  Now, trans will not shift into 2nd unless RPM’s are quite high.  Checked fluid and added a qt.  Still does it.  Linkage?  I understand there is some type of linkage or vac advance at the carb?  Can’t afford the $100 an hour at a shop.

  1. Did you check your transmission fluid level with the engine running and on a flat surface?

    For Turbo 350 (non overdrive)
There is a cable that runs from the carburetor to the trans and is commonly refereed to as the “kick down cable”. meaning when you are cruising in top gear and kick the pedal tot he floor it will cause the transmission to drop down a gear into second and not shift into third until the rpms rev high and then shift into third.

If this cable is rusty or sticking it could very well cause this issue. You may need to remove it and lubricate in with WD-40 or something to see if you can free it up.

I would disconnect the downshift cable at the transmission and test drive it and see if the shift point changes.

NOTE: This procedure applies to Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 transmissions only.

Unplug the harness from the switch. Remove the fasteners and remove the switch from the linkage. When installing a new downshift switch, press the plunger as far forward as possible. The switch will adjust itself when the accelerator is pressed to the floor.
