My truck is trying to kick its self in 4×4 or we think. I’ll be driving in 2wd and it will starting making this plastic grinding noise and won’t stop unless the vehicle stops or you put it in 4wd. We have replaced the vacuum hose that runs from the actuator to the transfer case along with the actuator. And it still makes the noise when you drive in 2wd.
I would think that one of the font axles (CV Shafts) or hub bearings are bad. When the joints or Hub bearings start to go they will make noise this way. When you put it in 4WD it applies enough pressure to eliminate the noise.
Put it up on 4 jack stands securely. Manipulate the noise and listen to exactly where the noise is coming from. If it is coming from the actuator area, it may be a bent shift fork.
The Front Drive Axle consist of the following components:
• Differential Carrier Housing
• Differential Assembly
• Left and Right Output Shafts
• Inner Axle Shaft Housing
• Inner Axle Shaft
• Shift Fork Actuator
