Gas gauge works off of a sending unit that is mounted to the side of the fuel pump located in the fuel tank and should not be related tot he dash lights.
Oddly enough the instrument lights are powered from TAIL/ILLUM LIGHT FUSE(15A) in the dash fuse box. and then runs through the TAILLIGHT RELAY. The Relay is activated from the headlight switch.
I would try the fuse and relay first then you may need to trace the wiring. Here is a diagram to help assist you.
