ford fusion 1.4 tdci 2003

I had a sudden power steering loss. I have had fluid changed and pump. But still a problem. Before I look at replacing the steering rack, a friend of mine said he had a similar problem and changed all of the above only to find that the problem was the universal joint between steering column and rack, even though the steering worked while front end was jacked up. Is this something that you have come across and is it worth replacing the UV joint before spending any further money on more expensive parts

    I have seen this before. While diagnosing the issue I was able to disconnect the steering shaft from the steering rack and check the universal joint and steering rack separately. After replacing the Universal joint the issue was resolved.

    There is a recall on some of the 2006 models for the upper universal joint but not on the 2003 model.
