1996 jeep grand cherokee

1996-jeep-grand-cherokee
While driving my jeep it will jump out of gear, do not know if its shifting into in overdrive of not. I have to pull over and work the 4wheel gear in order for the manual drive to engage any idea what might be causing this.
Thanks,
Linda

  1. Sounds like the transfer-case is causing you an issue if messing with it is what gets it back going. May be some loose linkage that is allowing it to pop out of alignment maybe. You may also want to make sure the transfer-case fluid level is full.

    RECOMMENDED LUBRICANT AND FILL LEVEL

Mopar Dexron II, or ATF Plus are the only lubricants recommended for the NV249 transfer case. Approximate fluid refill capacity is approximately 1.18 liters (2.50 pints).

Correct fill level is to the bottom edge of the fill plug hole.
