Think about TPMS when changing to winter rims

2017-kia-sportage

My 2017 Kia Sportage came with 225 55r 17 tires. I have a great deal on winter tires (free) and the size is 235 65r 17…I plan on putting them on new winter rims. Other than spedo issues, are there any concerns moving up to this slightly larger tire?

According to the manual the EX model came with 235/55R18 and the LX came with 225/60R17. And the SX model came with 245/45R19.

TPMS – Tire Pressure Monitoring System if equipped comes to mind. If you do go with a different set of rims you will want to add TPMS Sensors. You will need to perform relearn procedure once you install the new wheels with new sensors.

Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensor Relearn

  1. Connect a suitably programed diagnostic instrument to 16-pin self-diagnostic connector.
  2. In Global Diagnostic System Vehicle Type Selection menu, select “Vehicle Type” and “TPMS System”, and then opt for “OK”
  3. Follow on-screen instructions to register sensor.
  4. Verify that read ID matches written ID.
  5. After successfully registering sensor, verify function.
  6. Verify each sensor component to ensure that it functions correctly.
  7. Replace any tires or sensors that do not function correctly, proceed to sensor registration procedure, and verify if sensors function correctly.
Reset Procedures

The Low Tire Pressure Warning lamp will illuminate for approximately three seconds as a bulb inspection when the ignition switch is placed in the ON position. This system uses radio frequency pressure sensors that monitor pressure in all four tires. When operating the vehicle at a speed above 20 mph the Low Tire Pressure Warning Lamp will illuminate when low tire pressure has been detected. Adjusting tires to correct pressure will turn lamp off.

  1. My vehicle is not equipped with TPMS.

I am aware of the standard size tire for the Sportage, but wanted to know if I could safely use the slightly larger tire.

    Thanks
