The airbag warning light is on and I need to know what action I need to take.
A scan tool is required to read some stored air bag codes. But your 2009 Ford Taurus does not. So the next step would be to have the codes scanned. Feel free to post the codes below in the comments for more information on each code.

ACCESSING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
Without a Scan Tool
| Access Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) by turning ignition on and observing the air bag indicator lamp. Certain DTCs may not be displayed until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition has been turned on. This is the amount of time required for the diagnostic monitor to test and verify any and all system faults. If the air bag warning lamp is inoperative and a fault condition in the air bag system has been detected, a tone will sound in a pattern of five sets of beeps. If the air bag warning lamp is inoperative, it must be serviced before diagnosis can continue. |
| When the air bag control module detects a system fault, it will cause the air bag indicator to flash a coded, two-digit sequence. The first digit is flashed with a .5 second interval between pulses. There is a two second pause before the second digit is flashed also with a .5 second interval between pulses. There is a five second pause between each display. Each code will flash in priority order. Each code is flashed five times after which the air bag indicator will remain lit for the remainder of the key-on cycle. |
With Scan Tool
| Connect a “Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS)”and “Vehicle Communication Module (VCM)” with appropriate adapters, or suitably programmed scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), and follow manufacturer’s instructions. |
CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES
| 1.Connect a suitable scan tool to DLC. 2.Turn ignition switch to RUN position. 3.Follow scan tool manufacturer’s instructions to clear DTCs .4.Before proceeding with clearing operation, make note of DTCs displayed. Once cleared, DTCs cannot be retrieved. 5.All continuous DTCs will be displayed on screen. 6.Clear DTCs. 7.Continuous DTCs that have been cleared will not reoccur as Continuous in same key cycle. Only new DTCs which were not present before clearing can occur as Continuous after clearing. |
