Where is the fuel filter located on a 2012 Ford Escape XLT (2.5 liter engine)?
FUEL FILTER LOCATION
The fuel filter is located in the fuel tank attached to the fuel pump module assembly. It is not serviced separately.
Escape vehicles have a lifetime fuel filter that is a component of fuel pump module within fuel tank and cannot be serviced separately from fuel pump module. Regular maintenance or replacement is not needed.
FUEL PUMP AND FILTER REMOVAL 2012 ESCAPE & ESCAPE HYBRID
Warning: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related component. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
Warning: Do not carry personal electronic devices such as cell phones, pagers or audio equipment of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
Warning: Evaporative emissions system contains fuel vapor and condensed fuel vapor. Although not present in large quantities, it still presents danger of explosion or fire. Disconnect battery ground cable from battery to minimize possibility of an electrical spark occurring and possibly causing a fire or explosion if fuel vapor or liquid fuel are present in area. Failure to follow these instructions can result in personal injury.
Warning: Fuel in fuel system remains under high pressure even when engine is not running. Before repairing or disconnecting any of fuel system components, fuel system pressure must be relieved to prevent accidental spraying of fuel causing personal injury or a fire hazard.
Warning: Fuel in tank may be pressurized. Remove fuel tank cap slowly. If a hissing sound is heard, wait until condition stops before removing fuel tank filler cap. If these precautions are not followed, fuel may spray and cause personal injury.
- Relieve fuel system pressure.
- Disconnect ground cable from battery.
- Release fuel tank filler cap and position aside.
- Insert a suitable fuel drain tube into fuel tank filler pipe until it reaches fuel tank inlet spout.
- Drain as much fuel as possible from fuel tank and filler pipe, lowering fuel level below fuel pump mounting flange.
- Lift lefthand rear seat cushion and position carpet aside.
- Remove four screws and fuel pump module access cover.
- Disconnect fuel pump module electrical connector.
- Then Disconnect fuel tank pressure sensor electrical connector.
- Disconnect fuel supply tube and fuel vapor recirculation tube to fuel pump module quick connect couplings. Place absorbent toweling in immediate surrounding area in case of fuel spills.
- With a suitable fuel pump lock ring remover, rotate lock ring counterclockwise and remove.
- Prior to completely removing fuel pump, position it aside. Using suitable tool and a suitable fuel recovery system, drain fuel tank.
- To release bottom-mounted fuel pump module, reach into fuel pump module opening and squeeze retainer tabs on pump module housing and pull upward. Some fuel will remain in fuel pump module after draining fuel tank. Carefully drain fuel pump module into a suitable container.
- Remove and discard fuel pump module O-ring seal, making sure mounting area is clean and free of foreign material. Be careful that no foreign material falls into tank. Inspect surfaces of fuel pump module flange and fuel tank seal contact surfaces. Do not polish or adjust seal contact area of fuel pump module flange or fuel tank. Install a new fuel pump module or fuel tank if seal contact area is bent, scratched or corroded.
