REMOVAL

Do not reuse the nut. A new nut must be used when installing the wheel drive shaft.

Wheel drive shaft boots, seals and clamps should be protected from sharp objects any time service is performed on or near the wheel drive shaft(s). Damage to the boot(s), the seal(s) or the clamp(s) may cause lubricant to leak from the joint and lead to increased noise and possible failure of the wheel drive shaft.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel.
  3. Remove the rotor.
  4. Next Remove the wheel speed sensor and brake hose mounting bracket bolt from the steering knuckle.
  5. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut retaining cover.
  6. Remove the wheel driveshaft assembly retaining nut (2) and washer (3) from the wheel driveshaft.
  7. Disengage the wheel drive shaft from the wheel hub and bearing using axle remover tool No. J-45859, or equivalent.
  8. On 1500 series models, remove the wheel hub (4) and the bearing mounting bolts.
  9. Wrap shop towels around the inner and outer wheel drive shaft boots.
  10. On 2500 & 3500 series models, remove the wheel hub and bearing (4) mounting bolts.
  11. On all models, remove the wheel hub and bearing and splash shield from the vehicle.
  12. 2500 & 3500 series models, remove the O-ring seal from the steering knuckle bore.
  13. On all models, remove the wheel speed sensor mounting bolt.
  14. On 2500 & 3500 series models, clean and inspect the O-ring seal.
  15. Replace seal if there are nicks, cuts, dry, brittle or compression set.

INSTALLATION

  1. Clean all corrosion or contaminates from the steering knuckle bore and the hub and bearing assembly.
  2. Lubricate the steering knuckle bore with wheel bearing grease or the equivalent.
  3. On 2500 & 3500 series models, install the O-ring to the steering knuckle.
  4. On all models, install the wheel speed sensor mounting bolt to the wheel hub and bearing. Torque the sensor mounting bolt to 13 ft. lbs.
  5. On 2500 & 3500 series models, install the wheel hub and bearing and splash shield to the vehicle.
  6. On 1500 series models, install the wheel hub and bearing and splash shield to the vehicle.
  7. Install the wheel hub and bearing mounting bolts.
  8. On 2500 & 3500 series models, install the wheel hub and bearing mounting bolts. Torque the wheel hub to knuckle bolts to 133 ft. lbs.
  9. On all models, install the nut and washer retaining the wheel drive shaft assembly to the wheel hub and bearing. Torque the nut to 177 ft. lbs.
  10. Install wheel speed sensor and brake hose mounting bracket bolt to steering knuckle. Torque brake hose retainer bolt to 106 inch lbs.
  11. Install the rotor.
  12. Install the tire and wheel.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
