How to Replace Ignition Switch 2001 Volvo S60

2001-volvo-s60

I recently bought a 2001 Volvo S60. While at my friends house while we’re working on it it got stolen with the key in it. Later we retrieved it without a key I was wondering if it’s possible to get a used ignition as long as it has the key from a junkyard and put it in the vehicle and it worked?

Would be easier to order a replacement key from a Volvo dealership. All you need is the title to the vehicle and they can get you a new one for your specific vehicle.

As for just swapping yours out with one from a junkyard will make for extra work trying to remove yours without the key. Part of the removal procedure (listed below) is to insert the key and then depress the catch in order to remove the switch. Not saying it can’t be done, just more difficult.

IGNITION SWITCH, REPLACE

  1. Remove noise insulator panel below instrument panel.
  2. Remove upper steering column cover and casing around switch.
  3. Loosen switch mounting screw, then install key and position in Start position.
  4. Working through hole beneath holder, depress catch and remove switch from vehicle.
  5. Reverse procedure to install.
