Most Jeeps are similar but I am going to be focusing on the 1997-2007 Jeep Wrangler TJ Model. There are two different manual transmissions that come in the Wrangler for these years. The NV3550 Transmission came with the 4.0L engine and the AX-5 that came with the 2.5L engine. From what I have been able to find in the manuals and research these are both Syncromesh Transmissions. What that means is they require special fluid in order to keep the internal components working properly.
Synchromesh Transmission Fluid
There are several different manufacturers of the Syncromesh Transmission Fluid Available that all meet or exceed the require quality. I chose Royal Purple based on the reviews I read and have been quite pleased with the performance. It was a little pricey but I don’t intend of needing to replace the fluid again anytime soon.

The Pump
I will say from past experience in filling manual transmissions and rear ends that it can be difficult. Trying to hold the bottle upside down in a confined amount of space is no easy task. Not saying it isn’t possible and comes with a certain amount of mess but there is a better way. I came across this handy little pump that attaches to quart bottles and makes it quicker and easier. It is called the Slippery Pete Fluid Pump. For under $10 it is well worth it for any job like this.
In the video you will see it takes only a few tools and less than 15 minutes to DIY when it comes to changing the manual transmission fluid. Watch and see just how quick and easy it can be for you. And don’t forget about the money you will save when doing it yourself.
