I would like to know the correct way to do a fuel pressure test using the valve on the fuel rail.
*First you will want to use all proper safety measures. Then with the ignition off, connect the pressure tester according to the manufacturer procedure. You will be looking for two readings once the gauge is hooked up.
- Key On Engine Off: 60.0 – 66.0 PSI
- Key On Engine Idling: 60.0 -66.0 PSI
Pretty much anything less after making sure you do not have a restriction means replacing the fuel pump. Needing to replace the fuel pump is quite common on these trucks. Restrictions may be a clogged fuel filter or kink in the fuel line. But most often the fuel pump is what is needed.
Looked up the fuel pump for you that fits the 1996 Chevy Truck.

FUEL PRESSURE RELIEF W/TOOL
PORT FUEL INJECTION
After relieving fuel system pressure, a small amount of fuel may be released when servicing fuel pipes or connections. In order to reduce the risk of personal injury, cover fuel pipe fittings with a suitable shop towel before disconnecting to catch any fuel that may leak.
- Loosen fuel filler cap to relieve tank pressure.
- Connect fuel pressure gauge tool No. J 34730-1, or equivalent, to fuel pressure connection. Wrap fitting in suitable shop towel.
- Install bleed hose to suitable container, then open valve and bleed off pressure.
- Disconnect fuel pressure gauge, then drain gauge in suitable container.
THROTTLE BODY INJECTION
TBI 220
After relieving fuel system pressure, a small amount of fuel may be released when servicing fuel pipes or connections. In order to reduce the risk of personal injury, cover fuel pipe fittings with a suitable shop towel before disconnecting to catch any fuel that may leak.
- Loosen fuel filler cap to discharge tank pressure.
- The internal constant bleed feature relieves system pressure after engine is shut off; no further action is required.
FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELIEF WITHOUT TOOL
- Loosen fuel filler cap, then remove fuse and relay box cover.
- Remove engine coolant reservoir from the left front fender.
- Loosen mounting screws and remove fuse and relay box.
- Disconnect fuel pump relay from connector.
- Crank engine and allow to stall. Crank engine for an additional three seconds to ensure relief of any remaining fuel pressure.
- Disconnect battery ground cable to prevent possible fuel discharge if there is an attempt to start the engine, then reconnect fuel pump relay.
- Secure fuse and relay box to fender and install coolant reservoir.
- Tighten fuel filler cap.
FUEL PUMP RELAY LOCATION
C & K SERIES
Gasoline Engine
MAIN PUMP
1994 – The fuel pump relay is located on the rear righthand side of the engine compartment, near the battery.
1995-97 – The fuel pump relay is located on the lefthand side of the engine compartment, inside the relay center.
BALANCE PUMP
The dual tank, fuel level balance pump relay is located in the balance control module, which is mounted on the lefthand frame rail near the transmission crossmember.
