2001 Civic DX-G Manual Transmission 1.7L Water Pump & Timing Belt Replacement

2001 honda civic dx

Is this engine an interference engine? If the manual specifies a time and mileage for the timing belt, water pump and belt tensioner pulley change without specifying “whichever comes first” can you do it at the later of the 2 intervals? Do you have a diagram and steps to change it with the labor hours?

I think instead of waiting it would serve the engine better to go ahead and replace all the components at the same time. The water pump is driven by the timing belt and should the water pump bearings fail, so will the belt. But should that happen it appears that your engine is NOT considered an interference engine according to my research.

The free resource information is kind of basic in appearance. The Premium Manual is much better. Well worth the $20 in my opinion.

You won’t be disappointed and the cars wiring diagrams are included with the manual.

Labor Time

  • Timing Belt Replacement calls for 2.7 hrs. Labor Time.
  • Water Pump Replacement calls for 3.0 hrs. Labor Time. w/AC, Add 0.5 hrs.

WATER PUMP R&R

  1. Drain coolant into a suitable container.
  2. Remove timing belt as outlined under “Timing Belt, Replace.”
  3. Remove water pump attaching bolts, then the water pump,Fig. 1. Discard O-ring.
  4. Reverse procedure to install.
    a. Ensure all sealing surfaces are clean and free of dirt and debris.
    b. Tighten water pump attaching bolts to specifications.
    c. Fill and bleed cooling system as outlined under “Cooling System Bleed.”

TIMING BELT REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

This engine is classified as an Interference engine. If the timing belt breaks or jumps timing, a piston may contact an open valve. Piston to valve contact may cause damage to the valve, piston and other engine components. In some cases valve to valve contact may be experienced when the timing belt breaks or jumps timing. To avoid belt breakage, replace the timing belt as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer timing belt replacement interval.

With the timing belt removed, avoid turning the camshaft or crankshaft. If movement is required, exercise extreme caution to avoid valve damage caused by piston contact.

  1. Obtain the radio anti-theft code and the station preset settings prior to disconnecting the battery ground cable.
  2. Disconnect and isolate the battery ground cable.
  3. Turn the crankshaft pulley so that the TDC mark (A) lines up with the pointer (B), Fig. 1 below.
  4. Loosen the lugnuts on both front wheels.
  5. Raise vehicle and safely support the vehicle with jackstands.
  6. Remove both front wheels.
  7. Remove the splash shield.
  8. Remove the adjust plate mounting bolt (A), locknut (B) and mounting bolt (C), then remove the power steering pump without disconnecting the lines.
  9. Remove the alternator from the vehicle.
  10. Remove the ignition coil cover, then the four coils.
  11. Remove the throttle cable clamps and harness holder from the cylinder head cover.
  12. Remove the cylinder head cover.
  13. Remove crankshaft pulley using Honda tools 07JAB-001020A, 07MAB-PY3010A and 07JAA-001020A, or equivalents.
  14. Support the engine with a suitable jack and wood block under the oil pan.
  15. Remove the upper engine bracket.
  16. Remove grommet (A) from the upper cover and disconnect the TDC sensor connector.
  17. Remove the upper and lower timing belt covers.
  18. Remove the side engine mount bracket.
  19. Remove the CKP sensor from the oil pump without disconnecting the connector.
  20. Move auto-tensioner to release tension from timing belt, then remove the timing belt.Do not remove the timing belt tensioner unless replacement is required.
  21. If tensioner was removed from engine, install the tensioner as follows:
    a. Align the holes in the tensioner pulley and tensioner base, inserting a 3mm (.12 inch) pin in the holes.
    b. Install tensioner spring to tensioner assembly.
    c. Install the assembly to the engine with mounting bolt. Torque the mounting bolt to 84 inch lbs.
  22. Align the crankshaft timing mark.
  23. Align the camshaft sprocket timing marks.
  24. Loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt 180°.
  25. Route the new timing belt in a counterclockwise sequence, starting with the crankshaft sprocket, over the tensioner pulley, around the water pump sprocket and then over the camshaft sprocket.
  26. Install the tensioner spring to the tensioner bolt.
  27. Rotate the crankshaft 2 turns in the counterclockwise direction to position the timing belt on the sprockets.
  28. Set the No. 1 Piston at TDC compression stroke.
  29. Torque the auto-tensioner mounting bolt to 33 ft. lbs., then remove the pin from the auto-tensioner.
  30. Install the CKP sensor.
  31. Install the engine side mount leaving the bolts loose. Torque the bolt in sequence.
  32. Install the lower timing cover.
  33. Clean crankshaft pulley and bolt. Lubricate pulley bolt threads and washer with motor oil before installing.
  34. Install the crankshaft pulley using Honda tools 07JAB-001020A, 07MAB-PY3010A and 07JAA-001020A, or equivalents. Torque the bolt to 14.5 ft. lbs., then tighten an additional 90°.
  35. Rotate the crankshaft 5 or 6 turns counterclockwise so that the timing belt positions on the pulleys.
  36. Turn the crankshaft pulley so the TDC mark lines up with the pointers, Fig. 1.
  37. Inspect the camshaft timing marks.
  38. If the camshaft timing marks are not at TDC, remove the timing belt and reinstall.
  39. Install the upper timing cover, then connect the TDC connector and rubber grommet to timing cover.
  40. Install the upper engine mount bracket. Tighten the attaching bolts in sequenc.
  41. Install the cylinder head cover.
  42. Install the harness holder and throttle cable clamps.
  43. Install the ignition coils and cover.
  44. Install the alternator and drive belt. Refer to “Accessory Drive Belt Tension” for proper belt tension.
  45. Install the power steering pump and drive belt. Refer to “Accessory Drive Belt Tension” for proper belt tension.
  46. Install the splash shield.
  47. Install the front wheel and tire assemblies.
  48. Remove the jack stands, then lower the vehicle to ground. Torque the lugnuts to 80 ft. lbs.
  49. Connect the battery ground cable.
  50. Start engine and inspect that it operates properly.
  51. Place the radio control switch in the On position. When the word code is displayed, enter the customer five digit theft code. then preset radio to previous stations.
