What can i do to understand why the transmission won’t engage?
- Have a transmission shop diagnose the issue and have them explain it.
- Research “How a Transmission Functions”
- Scan the vehicle for Transmission codes present – if you have a capable scan tool
- Eliminate possible causes such as missing cv-axles, broken/worn shifter cable or sticking shift solenoids just to name a few
- Purchase an online manual that includes images, procedures and information
VALVE BODY ASSEMBLY, OVERHAUL
REMOVAL
Most valves are aluminum and cannot be removed using a magnet. Remove the valves by tapping the valve body on the palm of the hand to slide the valves out of the bores. It may be required to remove the valves and springs using a pick. If it is required to use a pick, use extreme caution to prevent damaging the valves or valve bores. Disassemble components of the main control valve body in small groups. Take special care when handling the main control components, since they are the most precise and delicate components of the transaxle. Neatly arrange the components as they are removed to avoid mixing similar pieces.
Do not stone or polish any valves. If the valves do not move freely, install a new assembly.
- Remove pump bolts, Fig. 1.
- Remove pump, Fig. 1.
- Remove bolts and separator plate, Fig. 2. Valve body separator plate has a bonded gasket.
- Remove check balls, Fig. 3. Note location of check balls.
- Remove modulator check valve and springs (1), Fig. 4. Relief valve springs are not interchangeable.
- Remove modulator check valve and drain back spring (2), Fig. 4.
- Remove manual low relief valve and cooler bypass spring (3), Fig. 4.
- Remove and discard solenoid regulator filter (1), Fig. 5.
- Remove and discard torque converter clutch filter (2), Fig. 5.
- Remove individual valves and springs by removing retaining clips and bore plugs.
- Verify hole in valve body sleeve aligns with hole in circuit passage, Fig. 6.
- Verify edge of sleeve is .21 inch above valve body surface, Fig. 6.
- If a new sleeve is required, press sleeve out of valve body using pump bearing/seal tool No. 307-394 or equivalent, Fig. 7. All valves must be removed from valve body during replacement of sleeve to prevent possible damage.
INSTALLATION - If removed, position a new valve body sleeve with notch and hole in sleeve aligned with valve body passage hole, Fig. 8.
- Press sleeve into valve body using pump bearing/seal tool No. 307-394 or equivalent, Fig. 7. Do not use excessive force when installing sleeve.
- Verify valve body sleeve extends .21 inch above valve body surface, Fig. 9.
- Verify holes in valve body sleeve align with passage hole in valve body, Fig. 10.
- Install valve body valves and springs.
- Install check balls, Fig. 3.
- Install modulator check valve and springs (1), Fig. 4. Relief valve springs are not interchangeable.
- Install modulator check valve and drain back spring (2), Fig. 4.
- Install manual low relief valve and cooler bypass spring (3), Fig. 4.
- Install new solenoid regulator filter (1), Fig. 5.
- Install new torque converter clutch filter (2), Fig. 5.
- Install new valve body separator plate with bonded gasket and bolts, Fig. 11. Verify correct alignment of relief and check valves to separator plate.
- Torque valve body separator plate to 97 inch lbs., Fig. 11.
