My 98 Toyota Camry ran out of gas and now won’t start

Toyota Camry

ran out of gas. put gas in and hasn’t started since. replaced fuel pump and filter. still will not start. cant find where to hook the fuel pressure gauge to. what else could be wrong?

One thing that comes to mind when replacing a fuel filter. You need to cycle the ignition key at least ten times to prime(re-fill) the fuel system. That aside, you can still attempt to spray some starting fluid in the air filter to see if the vehicle isn’t getting gas. The engine will attempt to run but will not stay running if it is not getting enough fuel.

There are many other reasons for an engine to not start and for that I have created a step by step chart.

On vehicles that do not have a fuel pressure testing port an in-line fuel testing tool may be put in place of the fuel filter for testing.

Fuel Filter Replacement

FUEL PUMP R&R

  1. On models equipped with coded audio anti-theft systems, refer to “Precautions” for code procedures.
  2. On all models, remove rear seat cushion.
  3. Disconnect fuel pump connector, then remove five screws and service hole cover.
  4. Remove fuel pump lead wire, then disconnect fuel line from fuel pump bracket. Remove fuel filter cap to prevent fuel from flowing out.
  5. Remove fuel pump bracket assembly, gasket and pull pump out.
  6. Reverse procedure to install. Reset audio anti-theft system, if necessary, as outlined under “Precautions. “
